What is Mangosteen ? For thousands of years, the people of South East Asia have traditionally anticipated a harvest that is only available twice a year. This is the harvest of the mangosteen, or as the islanders affectionately call it, The Queen of Fruits. In a part of the world that offers hundreds, if not thousands, of fruits, nuts, herbs, this fruit is valued above all the others. In Southest Asian countries, the entire mangosteen fruit was traditionally used for medicinal purposes like controlling fevers and warding off various infections. In more recent years, the fruit has become known for its premium taste and exceptional flavour, and it is often referred to as the Fruit of the Gods (in the Caribbean). The Mangosteen fruit, Garcinia mangostana, is about the size of a peach. The smooth, dark purple rind encloses a snow-white fruit. It comes from a tree that takes ten years to mature. Fully mature trees can be up to 80 feet tall and may produce thousands of individual fruit every year.
